Meer inligting by www.toringkerk.co.za.

Taalmonument to dance the Museum Day away
The free event showcases how museums serve as cultural hubs for the future of traditions

The Afrikaans Language Museum and Monument (ATM) will celebrate this year's International Museum Day in Paarl's iconic Toringkerk in style by paying homage to South Africa's musical wealth - from riel dance and klopse to traditional Xhosa dances and ballet.
As this year's theme for Museum Day is ‘Museums as Cultural Hubs: The future of tradition', the event will focus on museums’ roles to serve as cultural hubs from where traditions can be preserved, lived and adapted.

The participating groups are Hotshot Panthers (klopse), Boland Vastrappers (rieldans), Ulrich Benting & Myrchelle Williams (Latin-American), Infinite Achievers’ Fabia & Aldan (ballroom), Diversity (hip-hop), Triple A’s Portia Adams, Mia Adendorff & Danike Adams (ballet), Bootscooters (line dancing), The Beats (kwaito) as well as Dalubuhle Primary (Xhosa and gumboot dances).

The festive event takes place from 10:00 to 12:00 on Saturday, 18 May 2019. Entry is free, but booking is essential as only 100 visitors can be accommodated.

The Toringkerk (spire church) with its 57m high, distinctive spire was completed in 1907 and is considered one of the largest and most elegant church buildings in the country. It was declared a national monument in 1982. More information at www.toringkerk.co.za. Every year since 1977, the International Council on Museums has organised International Museum Day, which represents a unique moment for the international museum community. On this day, participating museums host creative events and activities related to the theme, engage with their public and highlight the importance of the role of museums as institutions that serve society and its development. In 2018, more than 40,000 museums participated in the event in some 158 countries. See www.imd.icom.museum for more information.

For further information and bookings, call 021 863 0543/4809, e-mail bemarking2@taalmuseum.co.za. The Taalmonument’s entrance fees are R40 for adults, R10 for South African students and pensioners, R5 for children under 18 (free under six years) and free for Drakenstein residents with valid library cards on specific days.
