50+ Child Friendly Restaurants in Johannesburg & Surrounds 2020
Our Bean is now 3 and Baby K is 1 and although we love to meet friends and family for a lively meal, going to just any restaurant has become difficult, to say the least. Between the kids' loud babble and active little legs, we spend more time chasing after them, keeping him away from other diners, than eating. Not wanting to be stuck at home all the time, I have taken the time to put together an extensive list of child-friendly restaurants and kid-friendly coffee shops and tea gardens in Johannesburg and surrounding areas, which we can enjoy as a family unit.

Situated on the edge of Delta Park, this child-friendly and pet-friendly outdoor restaurant will allow you to escape the hustle and bustle of city life and to simply relax. 5. AJ’s in the Park (Child-friendly Restaurant Craighall Park)
Situated in the Craighall Sports Club, this restaurant prides itself on its countryside feel and allows its patrons to unwind from their busy lives. Their menu offers a variety of yummy food options (from wood-fired pizzas to salads and steaks) and an outdoor play area for the kids. Every Tuesday, one adult meals buys you a kids' meal free of charge.

6. Antonnio's Italian Kitchen (Child-friendly Restaurant Lonehill)
This is one of our favourite restaurants as it offers great Italian 'adult' food, a relaxed atmosphere with a view and a large play area with jungle gyms, playground equipment, a jumping castle, a water fountain which the kids can splash in, bikes and mini soccer and basketball courts. The childminders are also really friendly and they even have a section called 'Let's Brew' serving Craft Beer.

7. 256 on Smit (Kid-friendly Coffee Shop and Party Venue Fairland)
This exciting venue offers a hall for dance classes, pop up shops and more, a spa as well as a restaurant with a shaded play area and a small animal enclosure. This is another favourite hangout of mine as the play area can be viewed and accessed from everywhere in the restaurant and they have a childminder over the weekends. They also offer affordable home cooked family meals to take home (to be ordered in advance). This kid-friendly coffee shop is a fantastic, flexible and affordable kids party venue.

8. The Green Room (Child-friendly Restaurant Greenside)
This kid-friendly bistro/cafe is the latest addition to the Pirates Sports Club East and is becoming another one of our regular lunch spots as the food is fresh and delicious and they have vegetarian and gluten-free options. The outdoor play area is big enough to keep the kids entertained but small enough for the parents to maintain control. This party venue offers great party packages and options.

9. Bergbron Plaaskombuis (Child-friendly Cafe Northcliff)
I get uber-excited when I think about this little kid-friendly padstal and cafe - it had homemade ginger beer (served to all guests as they arrive) and delicious boerekos treats such as jaffles, roosterkoek, vetkoek, pap and bobotie. Expect a farm style rustic setting with a jungle gym, a large garden and a swimming pool.

10. Nostimo by Mythos (Child-friendly Greek Restaurant Waterfall)
We had the privilege of visiting this new family-friendly restaurant for my birthday the other day and I was simply blown away. The food was delicious, the service impeccable and the view over the Waterfall Estate is lovely. Bean loved the play area (only semi-shaded, so pack a hat) and the artisanal bread and homemade ice cream. A definite must-visit for a relaxed family lunch or to celebrate a special occasion. This destination even boasts a pottery studio where the kids can paint their own ceramics.

Ri’Stretto is a popular family-friendly restaurant focusing on feeding and entertaining the whole family. Kids get to make their own pizza or go wild in the large outdoor play area, while the parents enjoy tasty Mediterranean and Italian style food with a glass of wine or a freshly brewed cup of coffee (espresso). 13. Papachinos (Child-friendly Restaurants in Clearwater, Fourways, Broadacres, Silverlakes, Boksburg)
This chain of child-friendly restaurants has become very well-known in parent circles and rightly so: they offer good, reasonably priced food and drinks (aimed to please both parents and kids alike) as well as indoor and outdoor play areas with childminders. Kids eat free on a Tuesday.

Bambanani prides itself on being an upmarket restaurant and party venue catering for parents and children alike. Their safe environment and supervised play areas (including a jungle gym, dress up and arts and crafts areas, as well as a media room) allow parents to indulge in a relaxing meal with friends knowing that their children are entertained and safe. We loved their Pizza!

The Fat Olive Restaurant overlooks a dam and has a large lawn and outdoor play area, ideal for kids to run around on and play. Expect to see a variety of bird life and game (a family of Zebra often comes to visit) while you enjoy a leisurely family meal. Kids can row on one of the boats on the dam as well as view the animals at the animal touch farm. The outside benches can be a bit cramped, so be sure to ask for a bigger table when making a booking.

We were lucky enough to stumble upon this place on our way home from the Vaal one Sunday and we fell in love. It has a restaurant as well as a coffee shop, a large outdoor kids play area with trampolines and jungle gyms, art stalls, and a bakery.
