Family Cars: To get that 7-seater or not?

I have always wanted a big family with lots of children and although my husband would have been happy with two (or even just one), I have persuaded him that a third child would be a good idea. A third child, however, means that we would need a bigger car and in these tough economic times, this might just cause my other half a potential finance- and ego-induced nervous breakdown. Not only does a third child come with extra school fees, investment policies and more, but the question lingering in the back of any man’s mind will probably be whether he really wants to invest in a 7-seater family car instead of the latest Audi A4. Will his sleek ‘0 - 100km/h in 6,2 seconds’ 5-seater dream car now be traded in for a family van filled with car seats, toys, nappy bags and residual kiddy snacks?

So, if this is something your family has been pondering on and you do not want to give the love of your life the fright of his life, take a look at this comparison listing various options for buying a 7 plus-seater SUV or MPV under *R500 000, then weigh up the best option according to your family’s budget and needs.

Family-friendly minimum considerations

  • Space: seats, legroom and boot space (with acknowledgement that 7-seaters generally have very little boot space when the 6th and 7th seats are in use)
  • Budget: initial capital input and then monthly running cost and fuel efficiency
  • Safety: at a minimum, all cars listed in this comparison have seat belts, ABS brakes and airbags
  • Security: central locking,an immobiliser and a built-in alarm system
  • After-sales financial implications, i.e. service plan and warranty

The Suzuki Ertiga is by far the most affordable when it comes to 7-seaters in the market, but you may be compromising a little on style and engine power. Also, because of the low price, some ‘nice to haves’ like climate control are not included in the standard offer.

The Nissan X-Trail with its sophisticated and stylish exterior is definitely more of a man’s car. This car will probably be my husband’s favourite as it is an SUV with a 4WD option. It is also really well-priced for the quality car you get and very competitive with other SUVs in the market.

My number one choice however, is the Hyundai H1. It is luxurious and modern and although it lies on the border of our allocated budget, this MPV offers 9 seats with ample boot space and has good finishes. Although it is a little heavier on fuel, it ticks all the boxes, has leather interior, a fair service plan and the best warranty offering in the market. Another big bonus is the fantastic resale value.
