National Children's Theatre Presents: Shakespeare's Coriolanus
The National Children's Theatre in association with Renos Nicos Spanoudes, proudly presents William Shakespeare's tragedy of political manipulation and revenge, "Coriolanus".
"Coriolanus" retells the events that unfold when a skilled Roman soldier is persuaded to become a politician. The play sets out to examine democracy and the conflict between the ‘haves’ and the ‘have-nots’- a class clash between the privileged and poor. The familiarity of "Coriolanus" in contemporary South Africa brings sharply into focus the Realpolotik of living in a society that is making sense of our leaders and our social responsibility.
National Children's Theatre's production of "Coriolanus" is a pulsing representation of Shakespeare in South Africa, 2016. The diversity and dynamism of the cast, and the slick and bold stagecraft, inject energy and entertainment into the text resulting in an outstanding performance. The production serves as an admirable example of young theatre-making in South Africa, engaging with it's young audience across the country, stimulating debate about politics and moral codes.
