National Children's Theatre | December Holiday Camp for children 8 years and older
Enrol now for our December holiday camp and have a great week exploring the world of Lemony Snicket!
“A SERIES OF UNFORTUNATE EVENTS”
The exciting and challenging theme for our December holiday camp is Lemony Snicket the author of the 13 books in the Snicket series (otherwise known as A Series of Unfortunate Events).
Lemony Snicket is the pseudonym of Daniel Handler, who wrote these very different children’s novels because of his own background as a child. He felt that all novels for 10-year-old were either fantasy books or books about sports. “As a child I really hated children’s books, I thought all books for children were rubbish,” So he started writing stories that he wished he could have read as a child.
In his first book, The Bad Beginning, he warned his audience up front that his books would not follow the course of fairy tales because he could not write stories that had happy beginnings or endings. Despite the gravity of this statement and the content of the stories, the books gathered massive praise from readers of all age groups. In fact, the Snicket series became an international bestseller with translation into 37 different languages and more than 60 million copies have been sold worldwide.
The campers will have great fun learning some songs, acting out some scenes - and creating and problem solving some of their own situations. There will also be discussions on the book themes that Lemony Snicket snuck in: courage, cleverness, good versus evil, greed, language and communication, rules and order, sadness, youth....
