Matilda The Musical is the multi-award winning musical from the Royal Shakespeare Company, inspired by the beloved book by the incomparable Roald Dahl.

With book by Dennis Kelly and original songs by Tim Minchin, Matilda The Musical is the story of an extraordinary little girl who, armed with a vivid imagination and a sharp mind, dares to take a stand and change her own destiny.

Winner of over 85 international awards, including 16 for Best Musical, Matilda The Musical is now in its seventh year in London where it continues to delight audiences of all ages.

The cast for our South African production of Matilda the Musical

Pieter Toerien and GWB Entertainment are delighted to announce the casting of the eagerly anticipated MATILDA THE MUSICAL. The multi-award winning stage adaptation of the much

loved Roald Dahl classic was originally produced for the stage by the Royal Shakespeare Company. The first International Tour will commence in South Africa in October 2018.

The coveted title role of Matilda will be shared by three uniquely talented young girls:

Lilla Fleischmann, Kitty Harris and Morgan Santo.

They are accompanied by Ryan de Villers as the gigantic holy terror, Miss Trunchbull and Bethany Dickson as Matilda’s devoted teacher Miss Honey. Stephen Jubber and Claire Taylor play Mr and Mrs Wormwood, Matilda’s awful parents and the loveable librarian, Mrs Phelps will be played by Nompumelelo Mayiyane.

Matilda is joined by the other pupils at Crunchem Hall Primary School who will be played by Jack Fokkens, Keeran Isaacs, Robyn Ivey, Joshua LeClair, Levi Maron, Ipeleng Merafe, Megan Saayman, Taylor Salgado, Cameron Seear and Zac Gabriel Werb.

We are delighted to announce the remaining adult company: Jasmin Colangelo, Katrina Dix, Sinead Donnelly, Michael Gardiner, Kent Jeycocke, Weslee Lauder, Carlo McFarlane, Kenneth Meyer, Daniel Parrott, Adrianna Patlaszynska, Jonathan Raath and Logan Timbre

MATILDA THE MUSICAL begins performances in Johannesburg on October 17th at The TEATRO at MONTECASINO and transfers to Cape Town in early December where it will run at ARTSCAPE over Christmas.

 

PRINCIPAL BIOS (in alphabetical order):

Ryan de Villers (Miss Trunchbull)

Ryan graduated from Rhodes University with distinction in Drama and Political and International Studies. Ryan’s theatre credits include: Jayne Batzofin's Measure UP and in the South African premier of Joshua Harmon's Significant Other, directed by Greg Karvellas at the Fugard Theatre.  Matilda will mark Ryan’s musical theatre debut.

Bethany Dickson (Miss Honey)

Bethany was last seen on the South African stages as Kathy Selden in Singing In The Rain. She started her professional career touring in High School Musial - Live on Stage for Pieter Toerien and Hazel Feldman and has gone on to play Sandy in Grease, Betty Schaefer in Sunset Boulevard and Maria Rainer in the International Tour of The Sound of Music.

Stephen Jubber (Mr Wormwood)

Stephen graduated from the University of Cape Town in 2006. Stephen’s theatre credits include: Rooster Hannigan in Annie, Riff in West Side Story, Sky in Mamma Mia, Johnny Smit in Hello and Goodbye, Steve Baker in Showboat, Hank in Jersey Boys, Sunset Boulevard, Jesus Christ Superstar, Macbeth, The Merchant of Venice, The Boys in the Photograph and High School Musical – Live On Stage.  Film and Television appearances include:  Honey 3, The Lost Future, No Man Left Behind and Loitering in Jozi.

Nompumelelo Mayiyane (Mrs Phelps)

Nompumelelo graduated from AFDA and her theatre credits include: Rock Of Ages, Home Affairs, Mass Mart Roadshow, Africa uMoja, Beautiful Creatures and Songs from Jazz Town. Film and Television appearances include: Skyf, Little One, Mad Buddies, My Perfect Family, Erfsondes and High Rollers.

Claire Taylor (Mrs Wormwood)

Claire was nominated for a Fleur Du Cap Theatre Award for best Actress in a Musical for her portrayal of Sally Bowles in Kander and Ebb’s Cabaret. Other credits include: I Love You, You’re Per-fect, Now Change, West Side Story, The Sound of Music, Sunset Boulevard, Dirty Dancing and most recently Sherrie in Rock of Ages.

MATILDA THE MUSICAL was commissioned by the RSC in 2010, and is the recipient of a record-breaking seven 2012 Olivier Awards including Best Musical and a joint Best Actress Award for the four girls who shared the title role.  Based on the beloved story by the Roald Dahl (Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Fantastic Mr. Fox), MATILDA THE MUSICAL is directed by Tony Award® winner Matthew Warchus, who helms this exhilarating and ingenious production with book by playwright Dennis Kelly and music and lyrics by Australian comedian, musician and composer Tim Minchin.  

MATILDA THE MUSICAL premiered at the RSC’s home in Stratford-upon-Avon, playing to sold-out audiences from November 2010 to January 2011.  Capturing the imagination of young and old alike, the RSC transferred the production to London’s West End in October 2011 where the show continues to play to sold-out houses at the Cambridge Theatre.  Roald Dahl’s magical story about a girl with extraordinary powers has been a favorite novel of millions of people across the world since it was published in 1988.

 

The production has sets and costumes by Rob Howell, with choreography by Peter Darling, orchestrations, additional music and musical supervision by Christopher Nightingale, lighting by Hugh Vanstone, and sound by Simon Baker. 

Roald Dahl (1916-1990) was the author of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Matilda, The BFG and many more of the world’s best-loved children’s stories. He remains one of the world’s greatest storytellers and is celebrated annually by the world’s biggest author-based event, Roald Dahl Day – which is recognised across the globe on 13th September.   
His first children’s story, James and the Giant Peach, published in 1961 and was a huge hit. Every subsequent book became a best-seller.
Today, his stories are available in 61 languages and, by a conservative estimate, he has sold more than 250 million books. Many of these stories have also been adapted for stage and screen, including the 1971 film classic Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, Wes Anderson’s acclaimed Fantastic Mr Fox, and the Royal Shakespeare Company’s multi-award-winning production of Matilda The Musical.
