Table mountain Sunset Special

Table mountain Sunset Special

I have to start this post with a confession.

The kids did not actually join us on the sunset special Cable car expedition. It was in fact date night. My husband and I planned this all week long and the weather prediction was perfect. With the late summer sunset, we could finish work, freshen up and still have plenty of time to drive to Cape Town Table Mountain after peak traffic has settled down. Upon our arrival, the ticket officer informed us that it is windy and there will be no visibility on top. Keeping in mind how long we planned this and that our picnic bag was all packed and ready to go- we looked at each other and nodded in agreement. We will make use of this opportunity as planned. Come hell or high water... cold misty windy weather- Moms’ taking care of the kids and we WILL have a good time.

As we escalated we could see the panoramic view of Cape Town, the Waterfront, Lion's head and signal hill. The cable car rotated and we were facing the mountain as we entered the cloud mass and thus the cold front heading towards town. Within seconds you could hardly see 3meters in front of you and the creaky sounds of door hinges resisting the wind set the scene for the perfect scary movie.  It felt a little like a scene from The Stand. With only a few lost couples (probably also on a date night or some desperate touristy trip to table mountain) hanging around taking “selfies” in the mist.

The wind settled and it became a very mysterious “sunset” on top of Table Mountain. We decided to have our picnic not too far away from the cable car station as they did warn that we might be called back depending on what the weather does.  Though we didn’t get our sunset it was such a magical experience to see Table Mountain, sitting in the clouds and enjoying everything we could see within 3 meters from us, that I would actually recommend taking the kids up there if you can find such perfect cloudy weather. Study the grey volcanic and glacier formed rock formations, take a storybook with and tell some tales. Let them experience the clouds and mysteries of Table Mountain, Van Hunks or the story about the Khoi blanket.

Note to self: Highly recommended trip, its educational, has great views and they even had a separate family waiting area- how cool is that?
