Running Events in the Western Cape

 

Getting out and walking or running at events seems to be an ever-increasing activity that both the individual and families can enjoy together. There are running events aimed at the more serious athlete, but I have compiled a list that is aimed for the family and also includes kids events who can then also participate and have fun. Most of the running events below have a 5km fun run for all to enjoy.

Here are some running events in the Western Cape.

May 2017

Wagon Trail Night Runs, Western Cape

The Anura Wine Estate just outside Klapmuts on the R45 is the venue for this monthly event. This running event is held every first or second Wednesday of the month. The Wagon Trail Night Run has been going for over a year, offering a relaxing run on the farm. After the event, you can enjoy some great food, wine and music.

There is a 5km and 10km run and walkers are welcome on the 5km route. When you finish the race there is a medal for all.

Cost: R80

A timing wristband is compulsory, you can buy one for R50 or rent at R10.

This running event is a series of trail runs that started in 2015. The owner of Onsite Events started this idea to encourage families and everybody to participate in an event that caters to all fitness levels and to help live a healthier lifestyle. It consists of 12 events each on a different wine farm that started on the 4 March 2017.

A new addition to the event is the junior challenge. This caters for age groups under 8 years old and under 12 years old that offers a 3km route. There is also an under 15 age group which has a 5 km route.

Applewood Harvest Festival, Western Cape

Celebrate the apple harvest in the heart of the beautiful countryside of Elgin. The annual Applewood Harvest Market and Tru-Cape Trail Running Challenge returns with a day of feasting and fun for the family. The festival kicks off with two trail runs through private farmland and then a family market for all to enjoy.

This running event in the Western Cape will be held at Peter Falke Wines, Groenvlei Farm, Annandale Road, Stellenbosch. Both routes will have some single track and vineyard trails with beautiful scenery all around.

Slave Route Challenge, Cape Town

This is a unique race that has historic and heritage significance. There is a half marathon for the more experienced runner, a 10 km run for the novice and a 5km fun run/walk for families and kids. The participants are given the opportunity to see the beauty and cultural diversity that Cape Town has to offer. The race runs from the City Hall through District 6, Company Gardens and more.

Amoija presents this year’s Olyfberg Summit challenge and forms part of the Wacky Wine Weekend in Robertson. There will be a pram friendly walking route available so everyone is welcome.

The Greyt Run, Greyton, Western Cape

Greyton is nestled in the foothills of the Riviersonderend Mountains, less than 2 hours’ drive from Cape Town Airport. Come and enjoy a great trail run and day out with the family. The route covers fynbos valleys with beautiful surrounding mountains. The running event starts and finishes at the Old Potters Inn, 16 Main Road, Greyton.

Patatfees Trail Run Race, Napier, Western Cape

Napier was once known as the sweet potato-growing capital of South Africa. The annual festival celebrates this and incorporates a half marathon, a MTB race and a trail run. There is also a market, beer, wine, art shows, entertainment, good food, children’s activities and lots more.

To be held at Montagu in the Western Cape. There will be a 15km trail run, for the fit runner, there are lots of steep climbs and descents, but one of the most beautiful and satisfying runs you will ever have. The route will take you up one of Doringlaagte beautiful lookout points and then to Tafelkop.

The 8 km is a nice jeep track and open gravel route for the more average runner, but there are a few hills to be tamed 

Colour Run - The colour run will take you around the beautiful dam at Doringlaagte, it is about 2km long but you will do it twice, everybody from young to old can do this one, just be prepared to be painted.

Parkrun – Cape Town

The park run, organise free, weekly, 5km timed runs around Cape Town and South Africa. They are open to everyone, free, and are safe and easy to take part in. These events take place in pleasant parkland surroundings. People of every ability are encouraged to take part; from walkers or those taking their first steps in running to Olympians; from juniors to those with more experience; all are welcome.
