Pinatas- the new best thing for your party

We found Sonjas pinatas- home and hand made pinatas by a mom from the Western cape. We asked her a little about the history of Pinatas and why she decided to start making them- happy reading & Share your comments!

The history of the piñata

There is a debate but it appears that its origin was not Spanish but rather Chinese. The Chinese version was in a shape of a cow or ox and was used to celebrate the New Year. The piñata’s was decorated with symbols to produce a favourable climate for the coming season, and after the piñata was broken the remains were burned and the ashes was kept for good luck.

The Mexican piñata was first made out of clay pots, which were filled with fruit and candies. Some of them were “traps” filled with flour, confetti or water.

But today the piñata is known and used all around the world, but they are made out of paper Mache or cardboard and decorated to go with the party theme.

How does the piñata work?

a Piñata is filled with treats and suspended from a rope. Then children or adults usually blindfolded take turns hitting it with a stick, until all the treats fall out.

And what a fun activity that’s always enjoyed young and old.

Then you also get the pull string piñata, how this piñata works is instead of whacking the piñata with a stick, the guests pull strings to release a trapdoor and the treats fall out.

Today piñatas are used for all kinds of parties, not only for children but adults too.

a Piñata can be enjoyed at birthday parties, baby showers, kitchen tea’s and special holiday’s etc.

Now why did I start making them?

Well I was planning my daughter’s birthday party and just then I thought why not make one for her on her special day.

I got so many compliments on it and that’s where I thought, let’s give it a shot.

And I must say I enjoyed it so much, each one is a treat to make and I add something to make it special in its own way.

O, yes and don’t forget the children’s faces full of joy that just brings so much warmth to my heart, it’s just priceless.

I make them part of the theme with a stick, and put something extra on it like the person’s name and age, and that makes them feel extra special.

How to order

You can visit my Facebook page and order from there, or you can email, WhatsApp or phone me.

You place your order and we discuss the design and price, then you can pay deposit or bring treats as the deposit.

I can seal the treats inside or make a small door to insert the treats.
