Olá Portugal! The Annual ReedValley Portugal Day Festival
Portugal Day, officially known as Dia de Camões, de Portugal e das Comunidades Portuguesas (Day of Camões, Portugal, and the Portuguese Communities), commemorates the death of poet Luís de Camões on June 10, 1580. Camões wrote The Lusiads, Portugal's national epic poem celebrating the country's history and achievements. The day is celebrated on 10 June every year and is Portugal's National Day.
Although this holiday is only celebrated officially in the homeland, Portuguese citizens from other countries such as India, Brazil, Canada, and South Africa also honour the day.
To celebrate Mossel Bay’s rich Portuguese heritage, ReedValley wine farm has decided to host the first annual “Olá Portugal! The ReedValley Portugal Day Festival” on 10 June 2017.
This day falls on a Saturday this year and as it is in a season where there are no other major events in the area; it is the perfect time to offer locals an exciting event and also to attract visitors and tourists to the area. For many years, the Lusito Land Festival in Johannesburg has been hosting a similar event that has grown into an extremely popular national event.
ReedValley hopes to grow the Olá Portugal! festival into a similar annual celebration.
Visitors to the festival can expect traditional Portuguese folk dancers, Portuguese music, live entertainment (3 bands), readings of poems by Luís de Camões, kids’ entertainment, Portuguese food stalls, wine stalls offering Portuguese cultivars and Port, authentic Portuguese curios, and much more.
ReedValley is fast becoming a must-visit destination in the Mossel Bay area and is also the first stop on a fast-growing wine route in the Garden Route. With unique festivals like Olá Portugal!, ReedValley hopes to not only offer the local communities a festive event that celebrates Mossel Bay’s Portuguese heritage but to also draw much-needed visitors during the off-season.
