The Cape Argus SportShow - Sporting festival with a difference

A unique sporting event is on the horizon as the Cape Argus SportShow gears up for its sophomore show.

15,000 spectators are expected to flock through the gates over the three days as families, celebrities and sporting upstarts unite behind the love of competition.

Sports of all creeds, disciplines and flavours will be on offer, either to take part in, spectate on or buy wares for. These include golf, rugby, cycling, cricket, soccer, tennis, netball, squash, athletics, swimming, hockey, bowling, fishing, diving, motor sports, equestrian and even more cerebral activities like chess and billiards, to name a few.

Event organiser Stephan Jooste believes the sheer breadth of the sporting codes on show marks the SportShow out as a unique offering.

“There’s nothing quite like it, and after our successful showing in 2016 we were determined to innovate further,” Jooste says.

A first for 2017 will be the introduction of tag rugby, with a clinic on offer for kids and a tournament for adults to take part in. Taking part is a phrase that explains the SportShow well, and visitors will get to try their hand at their favourite sports and even explore new exercise routines like CrossFit.

It’s not only mainline sports on show either, because Jooste and his team are keen to shine a spotlight on activities that are growing in popularity too. Families will get to watch - and learn from - master motocross riders, skydivers and wakeboarders, while mixed martial arts, boxing instruction, yoga and Pilates will impart the keys to mastering form and finesse.

“Education is a big complement of the experience. We want to teach people, and especially children, how to stay fit and healthy,” Jooste says.

Skills clinics, including the Gary Kirsten Cricket Academy, will be in town to improve young cricketers (not to mention hockey players, golfers and netball players too) while 2017 sees the return of Hungarian act Lords of Gravity amongst other celebrities.

Finally, the 50,000m2 area will have approximately 4500m2 dedicated to exhibitors, with two main halls selling sporting equipment and innovative tech, like health and fitness monitors, drones and trackers, sport data analytics and more.

“There’s no event that does sport like the SportShow,” Jooste says. “We believe a true sporting spectacle should encompass every sport, not a small selection.”

After 2016’s successful inaugural showing, the SportShow is gearing up for a bigger and better sophomore bow, one that has no rivals on the continent, and few peers the world over.

“South Africans are sports mad - it’s fitting then that the country hosts a show that really champions the spirit of competition.”
