Tasting Memories

It was a lazy Sunday afternoon in the middle of the winter. We were not in the mood to move around and as always our three-year-old wanted to play. Fortunately for us, she remembered I once said one can make juice, and lemonade from the lemons growing in our garden – so I did not have to come up with home entertainment ideas.

And so began a great fruit juice tasting experience. We had oranges, lemons and pineapple in the house. Daddy cut them all in halves and started explaining the anatomy of oranges like only my scientist husband can: “The cells keep the juice inside, taste it... and when we break the cells, chew on it... the juice comes out”.

We made three cups and gave her the first try. “Mummy! The orange juice is not as sour as the lemon juice! ... But I like both” - she exclaimed. “The pineapple is also slightly sour, but more sweet”. She insisted we poured her another tasting of each and even tried her hand at squeezing some herself.

Sometimes the simplest things can become the best memories. Herewith our little girls' first attempt at home made fruit juice!

Notes:

Educational: By spending time on this activity, your child may learn about tastes like “sour” , “sweet”, “ bitter” or  “salty” (consider adding some other fruit and spices you have in the house)

Movement: Squeezing fruit juice is good for fine motor control and shoulder stability.

Nutritious- Fruit contain nutrients like Vitamin C that may help to fight the common cold and build cells in our bodies. You can add some water if you’d like.

If you enter this activity more prepared – here is a recipe on
