Our first experience of ‘glamping’ at the new AfriCamps in Oakhurst, Wilderness

If you do not know it yet, Glamping is the new camping. We were invited to stay for a weekend for the launch of a new AfriCamps at Oakhurst, Wilderness on the Garden Route. Whilst I am not the biggest fan of camping with kids, I was very keen to experience ‘glamping’ - where the facilities and accommodation provided are much more luxurious than normal tents, yet you still feel close to nature as you would when camping.  AfriCamps has 8 boutique camps in the Klein Karoo, Cape Winelands, Overberg and the Garden Route. Even though it was my first glamping experience, Tanya wrote a blog about things to do in Stanford and Wessel wrote one on things to do in Robertson while visiting these AfriCamps destinations. AfriCamps camping spots all offer spacious and fully furnished self-catering units with excellent kitchens, comfortable bedrooms and large showers. (pssst... read all the way to the bottom as we have a surprise for you)

On arrival to the new camp on the Garden Route, we were all excited to see our accommodation and learn more about Wilderness and things to do in George and surrounds. Oakhurst is a wonderful venue for a new camp – it is based on a commercial farm which offers vast fields, dams and a forest to explore.  There are eight glamping tents on the farm, and our allocated tent had an amazing view from the wooden deck across the grassy hills.  We were amazed at our AfriCamps tent – it was fitted out so well we could’ve been in a hotel, not a tent!

The farm itself is run commercially by Jake and his wife Claire and they live on the farm with their three daughters. You can see the farm is rich in history when you pass the chapel, old graveyard and water mill.  You are greeted by cows along the path leading to the camp – this is a dairy farm and guests are given the opportunity to learn more about the dairy process on a tour, as well as lots of other activities offered such as horse riding, fishing, swimming or canoeing in the dams, as well as mountain bike trails and trail running tracks.

Chilling and enjoying the spectacular views from our wooden deck

We loved how peaceful the location was, and it is in easy reach of the beach, local markets and restaurants along the garden route. We will certainly be visiting again and we recommend the breakfast and braai baskets which consist of fresh and locally sourced food – perfect to get you in the mood to explore in the morning, and to wind down in the evening by the braai.

As part of this launch we are offering a fantastic night out for up to five people- follow our Instagram feed to enter!
